The Transition Partnership Program (TPP), WorkAbility I Program (WAI), and California Promise will host their annual beginning-of-the-year workshop on Tuesday, September 27, 2016. Key points of the workshop will be:
Homeboy Goes to Harvard Productions The population of students we serve face increasingly difficult situations due to disabilities, drugs, homelessness, and single-parent households. Mr. Santana challenges his audience to critically assess their own perceptions; he sends out messages on making choices, between hope and hopelessness, between evaluating young people based upon our own standards and accepting them in the context of their own, and between giving up on our most challenged youth and truly becoming their advocates. Do You Have Students Who Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI)? Did you know that a student under the age of 22, and regularly attending school, can still receive SSI benefits while working? Come to our workshop and find out how. This workshop will discuss more about the work incentives that are available to SSI recipients. One of our highest priorities is to help people with disabilities achieve independence by helping them to take advantage of employment opportunities. Work incentive employment supports disabled and blind SSI beneficiaries go to work by minimizing the risk of losing their SSI or Medi-Cal benefits. April Hamilton and Alani Sablan, SSI Benefits Technicians will facilitate this session. Working Towards Independence in the Community Victor Valley Transit Authority (VVTA) offers a wide range of services for all people, regardless of their disability. The VVTA has certified trainers who have been trained to educate your students in becoming more independent as they venture out in the working world, and as they strive to become more self-sufficient. Their routes extend from Barstow to San Bernardino. Come to this training and find out how the VVTA can help your student achieve their goals. Aaron Moore, representative from Victor Valley Transit Authority will facilitate this session. Are You a New Transition Partnership Teacher (TPP)? Participants will be given an overview of the procedures necessary to meet the needs of the Transition Partnership Program (TPP).  TPP teachers will have an opportunity to review the TPP contract goals, referral procedures, slot allocations, paid work experience opportunities, and learn detailed information about the Career Choices’ curriculum currently being implemented in the TPP classrooms. This training will be facilitated by Adrienne Shepherd, Coordinator Transition Services.  This is a mandatory session for new TPP teachers. Working with Students Who Have Autism Do you need extra tools/resources to guide you with helping students who have autism transition at school, a job, and in the community? Come hear about autism, the behaviors, antecedents, modifications, reinforcements, and so much more. Jennifer Rountree, Program Specialist will facilitate this session.
